Water and N-Butanol Condensation Particle Counter Discussion

A water based condensation particle counter is a newer technology in CPC history. Traditionally, CPCs have used N-Butanol as the operating fluid. A CPC is a less expensive particle counter than a laser particle counter, thus offers no sizing performance, but offers superb particle counting efficiency. The N-Butanol CPC operates much the same as a water CPC, but the N-Butanol evaporates quicker in the airflow, thus the butanol molecules will more readily bond to sub-micron particles in the airflow; permitting a faster response and providing superb particle detection down to 2nm in particle size. Water based CPCs essentially operate the same as a N-Butanol, particle counter, however the process of evaporation is slower, thus the sequence of growing a particle in the airflow, sufficiently large enough to be detected by a laser detector, takes more time, and generally requires more technical desing to accomplish the goals. On the positive side a water based CPC does not have odor issues as with the N-Butanol CPC, nor does it have a flash fire hazard as with the Butanol. Condensation Particle Counters are designed for aerosol particle count research, indoor and outdoor air counting measurements, medical research, and industrial particle counting applications.
